A prophetic word is not a second Bible

A personal prophetic word is a prayerful impression or message believed to be prompted by the Holy Spirit for a person or community. In the New Testament, prophecy continues to have a place, but it does not replace Scripture. Paul says we know and prophesy in part, and he instructs believers to weigh what is said.

The normal purpose

First Corinthians 14 describes prophecy as strengthening, encouragement and comfort. That gives a healthy centre of gravity. A prophetic word may contain warning, direction or insight, but its aim should not be to impress people with secret knowledge. It should help them respond to God.

Personal words and decisions

A prophetic word should not carry the whole weight of a major decision. Marriage, divorce, medical care, large financial decisions and life-changing moves require more than one impression. Scripture, wisdom, facts, trusted counsel, prayer and personal responsibility all matter. A healthy prophetic ministry strengthens discernment rather than replacing it.

What a good word feels like

  • Specific enough to be meaningful without pretending omniscience.
  • Humble about what is known and what is not.
  • Rooted in the character and purposes of God revealed in Scripture.
  • Free from manipulation, flattery and fear.
  • Able to be tested over time.
  • Focused on helping the person walk with God rather than attach to the messenger.
